First up: this weekend head to Crossroads, the fifteenth manifestation of SF Cinematheque’s annual film festival. The festival runs Friday through Sunday at Gray Area in the Mission, featuring 75 works of film and video by 68 artists representing 19 countries and territories presented in 10 curated programs. Monday, Cameroonian director Jean-Pierre Bekolo is in person at the Roxie for a Q&A between presenting two of his films, Aristotle’s Plot and The Bloodettes (read our interview with Bekolo from earlier this year for a preview), the Drafthouse New Mission shows Mike's Murder (on 35mm), The Conversation (repeating through Wednesday), and a new 4k restoration of The Toxic Avenger (1984), the Balboa screens American Splendor, and Deliverance(repeats Wendesday) is at the Presidio. Tuesday, Drafthouse screens Streetwise, Oz Perkins' The Blackcoat's Daughter for Terror Tuesday, and the new cut of Caligula (repeating through Thursday, for now), while the Roxie has 2001: A Space Odyssey (on 35mm, repeats Saturday) and the new restoration of Shoeshine, Wayne's World is at the Balboa, Dirty Harry (repeats Thursday) at the Presidio, a matinee of A Woman Under the Influence at the Lark, and a matinee of National Velvet at the Orinda. Wednesday, BAMPFA's Hiroshi Shimizu series comes to a close with Dancing Girl (on 35mm), The All Goldenis this week's Weird Wednesday at the Drafthouse, Danger: Diabolik is at the Balboa, Mon Uncle (repeats Thursday) at the Vogue, Goodfellas at the New Parkway, the Grand Lake screens At Her Feet with director Nadya Wynd plus cast and crew in person, and the Roxie gives you one more chance for some Animated Anarchy (on 16mm) and a jaw-dropping, beautiful new print of Medium Cool (on 35mm). Thursday, The Wild One is at the Balboa, Once Upon a Time in China at the 4 Star, Princess Mononoke (on 35mm, currently sold out) at BAMPFA, and Seven Samurai (repeats Sunday) and Only The River Flows are at the Roxie.
Friday, MOViES FOR MANiACS presents a 50th anniversary screening of Monte Hellman's Cockfighter, with author Kier-la Janisse (House of Psychotic Women) in person to talk about her new book on the film, the New Parkway's Nails from the Crypt series presents Death Becomes Her, Vera Chytilova's classic Daisies wraps up BAMPFA's retrospective of the Czech New Wave iconoclast and Liliana Cavani's The Year of the Cannibals continues their Ennio Morricone series, Repo Man (repeats Saturday) is at the Drafthouse, Friday is at the Balboa, Eno continues at the Roxie, where SFFILM award winner Great Absence (repeats Saturday) also screens, and War Game opens at the Roxie and Smith Rafael, with director Jesse Moss in person at the Roxie Friday and again at the Smith Rafael (with former Senator Heidi Heitkamp and others) on Saturday. Plus, of course, Crossroads 2024 begins at Gray Area and continues all weekend. Saturday, The Dawn is Too Far, a doc about the Iranian diaspora in the Bay, plays at the Roxie with director Persis Karim in person, Strangers Kiss is at the Drafthouse, The Royal Tenenbaums (repeats Sunday) at the 4 Star, and The Wind Rises and Once Upon a Time in America at BAMPFA. Sunday, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse and Point Break (the original) are at the Draft House, You've Got Mail is at the Balboa, Black Narcissus at the 4 Star, and Xanadu at the New Parkway.
