Thursday, the Stanford's Three Great Directors series continues with a double feature of Ernst Lubitsch's Bluebeard's Eighth Wife and Rouben Mamoulian's The Song of Songs (both on 35mm, repeats Friday), the Roxie kicks off its David Lynch tribute series with a pairing of doc The Art Life and Eraserhead (on 35mm), BAMPFA's annual African Film Festival begins with A Tooth for a Tooth, Days of Being Wild is at the Balboa, Night of the Living Dead with a live score by Sleepbomb is at the 4 Star, the Rialtos Cerrito and Elmwood have free matinees of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Shapeshifters and the Exploratorium team up for After Dark: Play of Light.
Friday, the Roxie's Lynch tribute continues with Wild at Heart (preceded by a drag show) and Lost Highway (repeats Saturday), BAMPFA's Mai Zetterling series continues with the actor-turned-director's 1964 feature debut, Loving Couples, Dark Entries records presents The Silence of the Lambs alongside a release party for their new 12" of Q Lazzarus's "Goodbye Horses", Adventureland is at the Balboa, Eraserhead at the Drafthouse, and Italian dramedy There's Still Tomorrow opens at the Smith Rafael.
Saturday, the Stanford has a Josef von Sternberg double feature of the mainstay masterpiece The Shanghai Express and the extremely rare The Shanghai Gesture (both on 35mm, repeats Sunday), the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum screens Tod Browning's Lon Chaney-starring Where East is East (on 16mm, with live accompaniment), Todd Haynes settles in for the weekend to open BAMPFA's near-complete retrospective, Far from Safe, with the first of two double features, Safe and Velvet Goldmine, local filmmaker Roddy Picante's Vibeland premieres at the Balboa, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Dr. (on 35mm, repeats Sunday) are at the Roxie, Blue Velvet is at the Drafthouse, Shrek and RoboCop are at the 4 Star, Best in Show is at the New Parkway, and Winnie the Pooh (2011, repeats Sunday) and Paris, Texas are at the Lark.
