Classics + Contenders

Series Site

Cinema is a young art form. Maverick directors come to be regarded as masters, and breakthrough movies that stand the test of time become classics. This series shows how the liveliest art creates its history, how today’s most inventive directors are inspired by the great movies that preceded them. In this series, eight of the best movies released this year by Netflix are paired with classic movies chosen by the directors. We see how directors like Federico Fellini, Alfred Hitchcock, Hal Ashby, Terrence Malick, Sidney Lumet, Bob Fosse, and John Cameron Mitchell inspired Jane Campion, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Hall, Jane Campion,  Lin-Manuel Miranda, Paolo Sorrentino, Robert Greene, and Michael Rianda. It is worth noting that while all of the selected classics were directed by men, three of the new releases were directed by women; a sign of progress.
