Today the name of John M. Stahl may be less familiar than the titles of some of his films—Imitation of Life, Magnificent Obsession—which are better known for the versions that Douglas Sirk made from the same source material in the 1950s. But years before Sirk emerged in Hollywood, Stahl was one of the undisputed masters of American melodrama, at the peak of his powers producing a remarkable string of films.
