LIFE IN FILM: A BABETTE MANGOLTE RETROSPECTIVE

Series Site

One of the first women accepted in the cinematography program of the prestigious L’Ecole nationale supérieure Louis-Lumière, for more than half a century now Babette Mangolte has been a vanguard figure in international avant-garde cinema circles as well as in the downtown art scene of New York City. But in addition to her well-known work for figures like Chantal Akerman, Yvonne Rainer, and Agnès Varda, Mangolte has also produced a diverse and compelling filmography as a director in her own right—structuralist works exploring subjectivity and perception (What Maisie KnewThe Camera: Je or La Camera: I), ruminations on landscape (The Sky on Location), movies about movies that were never made (Calamity Jane & Delphine Seyrig: A Story, making its NYC premiere) and movies that were (The Models of Pickpocket). In bringing together Mangolte’s directorial efforts, this series reveals her as every bit the artistic equal of her vaunted collaborators.
