Memorial Tribute: Suzan Pitt

Series Site

“One of the most inventive and inspired experimental animators of her generation, Suzan Pitt passed away in the summer of 2019 at the age of 75. To celebrate her achievements, we’ll be hosting two programs surveying her career as a filmmaker.

“Pitt initially trained as a painter and graphic artist, but driven by a desire to set her visual ideas in motion, she quickly gravitated towards animation. Her films conjure phantasmagorical worlds in which people, objects, and identities are in constant flux. She explores urgent subjects such as mortality and sexuality by means of dreamlike, profoundly ambiguous and unsettling imagery – but always with a vibrancy and sheer delight in creation that renders the films deeply liberating and wondrous.

“These screenings will showcase the Academy Film Archive’s recent restorations of the majority of Pitt’s films, including her masterpiece, ASPARAGUS (1978), and will also include a short documentary about her life and work (directed by Pitt’s son and daughter-in-law). With several of Pitt’s family members and friends present, this evening will represent a special opportunity to share thoughts and memories of an artist whose work is profoundly alive.” —Anthology
