Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection - 1994

Series Site

The Paris Theater is wishing a happy 30th to some of the most iconic films of 1994 with the eagerly awaited return of our Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection series. Beginning Friday, July 19th, don’t miss your chance to look back at an era when smash-hit studio productions and auteur-driven indie projects alike became cultural sensations, and influenced a generation of movie-making.

Hollywood brought us films in ’94 that remain deeply embedded in our cultural memory, be it one of Disney’s most enduring animated classics, The Lion King, or Jan de Bont’s epic thrill-ride Speed, Robert Zemeckis’ endlessly quoted Best Picture winner Forrest Gump, or the word-of-mouth sleeper hit of that year, The Shawshank Redemption. Meanwhile, young filmmakers and indie auteurs massively disrupted the traditional idea of what could be a box office success, with artists like Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction) and Kevin Smith (Clerks) using their distinctive voices to tread a new path for box office success, while films like Ben Stiller’s Reality Bites and Rose Troche’s Go Fish indelibly captured the mood of Generation X. See them all as if for the first time on the big screen.

And be sure not to miss the year’s unforgettable work from internationally acclaimed auteurs, like Wong Kar Wai’s Chungking Express, Gillian Armstrong’s moving adaptation of Little Women, Tim Burton’s massively entertaining Ed Wood, and the epic, legendary masterwork of Béla Tarr, Sátántangó.

Enjoy 35mm screenings of Chris Elliot’s side-splitting Cabin BoyThe Hudsucker Proxy from the Ethan & Joel Coen, Oliver Stone’s gritty Natural Born Killers, Ben Stiller’s feature directorial debut that spawned generations of Lisa Loeb fans with Reality Bites, John Waters’s Serial Mom starring Kathleen Turner and Louis Malle’s nod to the theater classic, Vanya on 42nd Street.
