The Music Films of Todd Haynes

Series Site

From his early plunge into the tragedy of the Carpenters to his new paean to the Velvet Underground, through explorations of the glam legacy and the Dylan myth, music has always been a touchstone for Todd Haynes. With Haynes’s The Velvet Underground having been established as one of the best-received films of 2021—like the Velvets, Haynes is a cult phenomenon who’s gone on to have an outsized cultural impact—we’re taking a look back at some of the director’s previous pop music-oriented films, including Haynes collaborator Ed Lachman’s recently restored 1990 Lou Reed and John Cale concert film Songs for Drella, and a very special secret screening.
