Lurid, bawdy, sly and spectacular, Verhoeven’s films have never been afraid to push buttons. IFC Center’s series revisits some of the filmmaker’s most outrageous visions, from boundary-pushing Hollywood work like ROBOCOP, STARSHIP TROOPERS, the controversial BASIC INSTINCT (whose new 4K restoration has its NYC premiere in the program), and the reviled-but-beloved SHOWGIRLS, to recent arthouse provocations BLACK BOOK, TRICKED and ELLE.
Verhoeven’s new film BENEDETTA is based on the true story of a 17th-century nun (Virginie Efira) who becomes entangled in a lesbian affair with a new arrival in her convent. But it’s Benedetta’s shocking religious visions that threaten to shake her mother superior’s (Charlotte Rampling) faith—and the Church itself—to its core.
