Monday, Ann Hui's July Rhapsody continues at the Presidio (through Thursday), the Balboa kicks off a Phillip Seymour Hoffman mini-series of double features with Capote and Synecdoche, New YorkCrimes of Passion and John Carpenter's Starman are at the Drafthouse New Mission, Studio Ghibli's The Cat Returns and Luis Buñuel's Belle de Jour are at the Lark, the New Parkway plays Catherine Breillat's Last Summer (repeating through Wednesday), and, at the Roxie, this week's Fraenkel Fest reprises start with Wild Strawberries (on 35mm) and Wings of Desire, plus Banel & Adama's final show. Tuesday, the Drafthouse has a matinee of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension (repeating Wednesday) and a Terror Tuesday screening of Jean Rollin's The Living Dead Girl, presented by Girls, Guts, and Giallo podcast host Annie Rose Malamet, the Jewish Film Festival continues with, among many other screenings this week, the California premiere of a new restoration of 1922's Breaking Home Ties, with live musical accompaniment, while the New Parkway screens Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, the Roxie reprises Blow-UpBlade Runner (Final Cut), and offers one more chance to catch Last Summer, and the Balboa's PSH mini-series screens Almost Famous and The MasterWednesdayRuss Meyer's Vixen! is at the Drafthouse, The Battle of Algiers is at BAMPFA, The Shawshank Redemption is at the New Parkway, and the Balboa's last PSH double is Love Liza and Before the Devil Knows You're DeadThursdayCriss Cross continues BAMPFA's noir series, Elvis Presley is in Viva Las Vegas at the Balboa, The Rock is at the 4 Star, and the double bill in this week's Vincente Minnelli series at the Stanford is the classic An American in Paris and the rarity Madame Bovary, starring Jennifer Jones (on 35mm, repeating through the weekend).

Friday, BAMPFA's Vera Chytilová series kicks off with the surreal classic Daisies, Nails from the Crypt presents Killer Klowns from Outer Space at the New Parkway, the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum kicks off the Broncho Billy Silent Film Festival (and, despite the name, there's more programming about film archiving and Greta Garbo than Broncho Billy, so take a peek even if cowboys aren't your thing), the Presidio's revival series runs the Bridge on the River Kwai and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers for the weekend and into next week, Eno opens at the Roxie (with director Gary Hustwit in person for some shows Saturday and Sunday, so check the listing for details), and it's playing everywhere, but at the Roxie, selected shows of Longlegs will be on 35mm from Friday through next week. Saturday, BAMPFA's Hiroshi Shimizu series continues with Forget Love for Now (on 35mm) and their Les Blank series wraps up with Blank's Fitzcarraldo making-of doc, Burden of Dreams, with co-director Maureen Gosling, Harod Blank, and archivist Anthony Matt in person, while the Lark shows Kiki's Delivery Service (repeats Sunday and Monday), Harold and Maude is at the Roxie, Jackie Brown at the Balboa, Amelie at the Vogue, this week's Popcorn Palace at the 4 Star is Men in Black (repeating Sunday), and the Smith Rafael premieres a new restoration of Rabbit Proof Fence with directory Phillip Noyce in person. SundayHowl’s Moving Castle (on 35mm) and Marco Bellochio's 1965 debut, Fists in the Pocket, are at BAMPFA, Federico Fellini's Nights of Cabiria (repeats Monday) is at the Lark, City of God is at the Balboa, and, if you missed them at BAMPFA, Maureen Gosling and Harrod Blank are in person again at the Roxie for Burden of Dreams, which also screens at the Smith Rafael sans-Q&A.
