First up, several festivals too voluminous to detail in the daily list vie for your attention this week: the mostly free Drunken Film Festival kicks off with two feature-length films (see our featured screening this week, below) before continuing its annual tour of free short film programs in Oakland bars; the Mill Valley Film Festival begins its parade of this year's buzzy festival circuit favorites, Oscar-season hopefuls, and new discoveries from near and far; and the first half of the final program of Don Malcom's deep-cut French noir selections, The French Had a Name for It, lands at the Roxie. Monday, the Alamo Drafthouse New Mission has a Hoop Dreams matinee and the newly-struck 70mm print of Vertigo(repeats Tuesday), the new restoration of Basquiat continues (repeating all week) and Maya and the Wave plays at the Roxie, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is at the Balboa, Akira Kurosawa's Stray Dog at the Lark, and Ellie Vanderlip presents her triple-projection Abalone Euphony with live musical scoring at the 4 Star. 

Tuesday, director Stephanie Jones is in person for Maya and the Wave at the Smith Rafael, Lucio Fulci's The Gates of Hell is at the Drafthouse, Suspiria (repeats Wednesday) at the Roxie, and Reservoir Dogs at the Balboa. 

Wednesday, Jennifer Reeves is in person to present her dual-projection performance, The Gloria of Your Imagination, at BAMPFA, Clash of the Wolves (1925), a sing-long The Greatest Showman, and Fred Durst's (yes, that Fred Durst) John Travolta- and Devon Sawa-starring The Fanatic are at the Drafthouse, Persona is at the Balboa, All About Evil (repeats Thursday) at the Vogue, and Strangers on a Train (repeats Sunday) at the 4 Star. 

Thursday, a free screening of Real Women Have Curves wraps up BAMPFA's Los Angeles series, Pan's Labyrinth is at the New Parkway, Daniel Auteuil's An Ordinary Case  at the 4 Star, and the Stanford's Noir + Lewton series continues with Bedlam and Fritz Lang's Secret Beyond the Door (on 35mm, repeating Friday).

Friday, Takashi Miike's Audition opens the Roxie's You Are So Cursed: J-Horror Classics series, Halloween 3: Season of the Witch is at Landmark Opera Plaza, Frankie Freako (repeats Sunday) at the Drafthouse, Shaun of the Dead at the New Parkway, and Shapeshifters presents Self-Constructions, the third program in their  ongoing series, Gravitational Lensing: Feminist Film Dialogues (see our interview with the co-programmers). 

Saturday, the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum has a Haunted House night with The Cat and the Canary (plus Fleischer Studios and Keaton shorts), Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Pulse (on 35mm) and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou at the Roxie, this week's Popcorn Palace at the 4 Star is Toy Story 4, the Rialtos Cerrito and Elmwood have free family matinees of Monster House, Other Cinema presents Psycho-Geo: US at Artists' Television Access, the Stanford's screens two noir classics, The Third Man and Key Largo (on 35mm, repeating Sunday), and Grand Opening Arts gallery in Berkeley screens The Bad Seed

Sunday, Paul Schrader's Hardcore is at the Drafthouse, Bernie at the Balboa, and The Blair Witch Project at the 4 Star.
